About Kenya

Why Kenya Is the World's Top Safari Destination

A Kenya safari is East Africa's classic Big Five experience: witness the Great Wildebeest Migration cross the Mara River in the Masai Mara (July–October), photograph elephant herds beneath Mount Kilimanjaro in Amboseli, and meet the last two northern white rhinos at Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Most travellers stay 4–10 days, with packages from $958 for a 3-day midrange safari to $11,897 for a 10-day ultra-luxury flying safari.

Kenya Safari at a Glance

  • Best for: first-time safari-goers, families, honeymooners, Great Migration and Big Five photography
  • Signature wildlife: the Big Five, the Great Wildebeest Migration, black and white rhino, Grevy's zebra and reticulated giraffe in Samburu, 1,100+ bird species
  • Best months: June–October (dry season and Mara river crossings); January–February is a dry, quieter second window
  • Typical trip length: 4–10 days on safari; add 3–4 days on the coast at Diani Beach or Watamu
  • Cost: from $958 (3 days, midrange) to $11,897 (10 days, ultra-luxury flying)
  • Getting there: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), Nairobi — East Africa's main flight hub

The Great Wildebeest Migration

Every year between July and October, over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle, cross the Mara River in one of nature's most spectacular events. The Masai Mara National Reserve is the best place in the world to witness this dramatic river crossing, and our 3-day fly-in Maasai Mara safari gets you there in under an hour from Nairobi.

Which Parks Should You Visit in Kenya?

Kenya has over 50 national parks and reserves. These are the ones our Nairobi-based safari team recommends most often:

How Much Does a Kenya Safari Cost?

For a full line-by-line breakdown — per-day budgets, what's included and how to save — see our complete 2026 Kenya safari cost guide.

The Big Five & Beyond

Kenya is one of the best countries in Africa to see all of the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. Beyond these iconic species, the country's diverse ecosystems support over 1,100 bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.

Leopards are the trickiest of the five to find — our field guide to how the African leopard hides its spots explains where our guides look and why sightings cluster along the Mara's river lines.

Beach & Bush Combinations

Kenya's Indian Ocean coastline offers pristine white-sand beaches in Diani, Watamu, and Lamu — perfect for combining a bush safari with a relaxing beach holiday. The ancient Swahili town of Lamu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See our Kenya safari & beach combinations.

Culture & Community

The Maasai, Samburu, and over 40 other ethnic communities add rich cultural depth to any Kenya safari. Many conservancies are community-owned, ensuring that tourism directly benefits local communities.

Bringing something home? See our guide to the best handcrafted African safari souvenirs — what to buy in Kenya, what it should cost in 2026 and how to shop ethically.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Kenya?

Kenya is a year-round destination. The dry season (June–October) offers the best game viewing and coincides with the Great Migration. The short rains (November–December) bring lush landscapes and fewer crowds, while the green season (March–May) offers excellent value and newborn wildlife.

Visa & Entry Requirements

Kenya uses an online Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) — apply at least a few days before departure; visitors no longer obtain a traditional visa on arrival. Travellers combining countries can use the East Africa Tourist Visa, which covers Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda on a single multiple-entry permit. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you arrive from a country with risk of transmission. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond arrival.

Is Kenya Safe for a Safari?

Yes — Kenya's safari circuit is one of the most established in the world. Parks, conservancies and lodges operate with professional driver-guides, and our team travels these routes every week. In Nairobi, take normal big-city precautions and use arranged transfers. All Imara Africa Safaris itineraries use vetted lodges and experienced guides, and our Nairobi office provides on-the-ground support throughout your trip.

Is Kenya Good for Families?

Kenya is arguably Africa's best family safari destination: driving distances between the Mara, Lake Nakuru, Naivasha and Amboseli are short, many lodges have family rooms, pools and child-minding, and private conservancies offer flexible, child-friendly activities. See our dedicated Kenya family safari guide and safari with kids tips.
