Access to the Masai Mara National Reserve is convenient and can be done either by air or by road, depending on your preference and schedule. Most travelers arrive through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi, then continue to the reserve via a domestic flight or road transfer. By air, the quickest and most comfortable option is flying from Wilson Airport (Nairobi) to one of the Mara’s airstrips such as Mara Serena, Keekorok, Ol Kiombo, Musiara, or Kichwa Tembo. Flights take approximately 45–60 minutes, followed by a short transfer to your lodge or camp. Scheduled airlines including AirKenya, Safarilink, and Mombasa Air Safari operate daily flights to the reserve, with additional charter flight options available for more flexibility and direct access. By road, the Masai Mara is located about 225–280 km from Nairobi, with a journey time of approximately 5 to 6 hours. The drive passes through the scenic Great Rift Valley and Narok town before reaching the reserve. While most of the route is on tarmac, the final stretch consists of rough, unpaved roads. A 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended, especially during the rainy season, as roads can become muddy and difficult to navigate.
