By Air: The fastest and most convenient option is a scheduled flight from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Taita Hills Airstrip (Voi Airstrip), which takes approximately 1 hour. Guests are then transferred to the lodge in a safari vehicle, with the drive taking about 20–30 minutes. Flights are also available from Mombasa, taking approximately 30 minutes.
By Road: Guests can drive from Nairobi via the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway to Voi and Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. The journey covers approximately 350–400 km and takes around 5–6 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. From Mombasa, the drive takes approximately 3–4 hours. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for maximum comfort.
By Train (SGR): Travelers can take the Madaraka Express (SGR) from Nairobi or Mombasa to Voi Station, followed by a road transfer of approximately 45–60 minutes to the lodge. This is a comfortable and scenic alternative to flying or driving.

Located in the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, adjacent to Tsavo West National Park, Salt Lick Safari Lodge is one of Kenya's most iconic safari properties. Famous for its unique stilted design overlooking busy waterholes, the lodge offers exceptional wildlife viewing directly from guest rooms, viewing decks, and underground hides.
This is the prime time to visit Salt Lick Safari Lodge. During the dry season, animals congregate around water sources, especially the lodge's waterholes, making wildlife viewing outstanding. Elephants, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, lions, and numerous antelope species are frequently seen. Visibility is excellent due to shorter vegetation and dry conditions.
The short dry season is another fantastic time to stay at the lodge. Wildlife remains concentrated around water sources, temperatures are pleasant, and the sanctuary is generally less crowded than during the peak mid-year safari season.
The short rains bring fresh vegetation, beautiful scenery, and excellent birdwatching opportunities. The sanctuary becomes lush and photogenic while wildlife viewing remains rewarding. This period is ideal for photographers and guests seeking fewer visitors.
These are typically the wettest months in the Tsavo ecosystem. Although some roads may become muddy, guests enjoy greener landscapes, lower rates, excellent birdlife, and a more exclusive safari experience with fewer vehicles.
