An Exclusive Luxury Base at the Foot of the Virunga Volcanoes
Mount Gahinga Lodge offers a comfortable and scenic retreat with luxurious bandas, nestled at the foot of the Virunga Mountains. It’s the perfect base for gorilla trekking and exploring Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Mount Gahinga Lodge is a small eco-retreat of traditional bandas set directly at the entrance to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, in the shadow of the Virunga volcanoes. Its all-inclusive simplicity, in-room fireplaces and community roots make it a warm, purposeful base for Uganda's quietest gorilla park.
The lodge stands at Mgahinga's park entrance in Uganda's far southwest, reached by a 1.5-hour scheduled flight from Entebbe to Kisoro Airstrip plus a 45-minute 4x4 drive, a 3-hour cross-border transfer from Kigali, or a 9 to 10-hour drive from Kampala. Mgahinga offers mountain gorilla trekking with famously light visitor numbers, golden monkey tracking found in few other parks, volcano hikes up Gahinga and Muhavura, nature walks and Batwa cultural encounters.
Just 8 bandas — Standard, Deluxe and Family — combine traditional hut architecture with en-suite bathrooms, private verandas and fireplaces against the highland chill. A restaurant, bar, pool, spa treatments and firepit boma support the all-inclusive format, with volcano views from the grounds. Guided activities are coordinated by lodge staff, and complimentary laundry keeps trekking kit in rotation.
The lodge combines readily with Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for a second trek, or with a northern extension such as the 3-day Uganda safari to Murchison Falls.
Days here run to the rhythm of the park gate. Gorilla and golden monkey treks begin with an early breakfast before the short transfer to the Mgahinga briefing point, so you set off with the forest still cool. Trekking hours vary with where the primates have moved overnight, which is why a flexible, all-inclusive base matters: whenever you return, a hot meal, a spa treatment and a fire are waiting.
Afternoons suit gentler pursuits — the pool, the gardens, or simply your banda's private veranda with the Virunga volcanoes filling the horizon. Evenings gather around the firepit before you retire to an in-room fireplace, a genuine comfort at this altitude where nights turn cold. With only 8 bandas across Standard, Deluxe and Family categories, the lodge never feels busy even at capacity.
Room service is available if a long trek leaves you wanting a quiet night in.
Spacious bandas designed for families, offering multiple beds and a larger living area for shared comfort.
Larger, more luxurious bandas with a sitting area, upgraded furnishings, and panoramic mountain views, ideal for those seeking more space and comfort.
Cozy bandas featuring a double or twin bed, en-suite bathroom, and private veranda with views of the Virunga Mountains.
