An Iconic Safari Lodge Surrounded by Tanzania's Untamed Wilderness
Tarangire Safari Lodge offers tented and bungalow accommodation with panoramic views over the Tarangire River and plains, a pool, dining, and classic safari experiences inside Tarangire National Park.
Tarangire Safari Lodge has earned its reputation the long way: family-run and established in 1985, it commands a bluff directly above the Tarangire River with what many consider the finest lodge view in the park. Watching elephant herds file down to the water from your veranda is the property's signature experience.
The lodge stands inside Tarangire National Park close to the main entrance, roughly 120 km and a 2 to 3-hour drive from Arusha, with Kuro and Tarangire airstrips serving fly-in guests in 20 to 30 minutes. The river valley below concentrates wildlife spectacularly in the dry season: huge elephant herds, lions, leopards, giraffe, zebra and buffalo all frequent the area, and large game is often visible from the lodge grounds without starting an engine.
The 35 accommodations mix classic thatched-roof safari tents, with twin or double beds and solar-heated showers, alongside round stone bungalows built in Maasai-inspired style for families needing solid walls and extra space. A pool, boma dinners and a relaxed communal dining tradition preserve the lodge's old-school safari soul. A boutique gift shop, massage and spa services and a sundowner terrace add gentle comforts without diluting the honest wilderness character that regulars return for year after year.
Push deeper into Tanzania via the Serengeti, ideally on the 7-day Tanzania migration safari through the northern parks.
Classic thatched‑roof canvas tents with either twin beds or a double bed, en‑suite bathroom with solar‑heated shower, and a private veranda overlooking the park and river below.
Larger safari tent option suitable for families, featuring multiple beds, en‑suite bathroom and veranda space for shared relaxation after game drives.
Solid‑wall circular bungalows built in traditional Maasai style, ideal for families or those seeking more space. These have en‑suite bathrooms with hot water, seating areas and views of the surrounding wilderness

Located inside Tarangire National Park, this iconic lodge overlooks the Tarangire River and offers some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in Northern Tanzania. The lodge is especially famous for its panoramic views, large elephant herds, and excellent access to the park's wildlife-rich river valley.
This is the premier time to visit Tarangire Safari Lodge. During the dry season, wildlife migrates from surrounding areas and congregates along the Tarangire River, creating one of the highest wildlife concentrations in East Africa. Elephant herds, lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, and numerous antelope species are commonly seen. Vegetation is thinner, making game viewing easier.
Tarangire is renowned for its enormous elephant populations. During these months, hundreds of elephants gather around the river and swamps, providing some of Africa's finest elephant-viewing experiences.
The park becomes lush and vibrant after the short rains. Birdwatching is exceptional, with migratory species arriving from Europe and Asia. Visitor numbers are lower, the scenery is stunning, and photography opportunities are excellent.
These are the wettest months in Tarangire. While wildlife disperses and some roads can become challenging, visitors enjoy:
