Overview
Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks are two adjoining wildlife reserves located in southeastern Kenya. They are part of the larger Tsavo Conservation Area, which is one of the largest protected areas in Africa. Here’s a brief overview of each park:
Tsavo East National Park:
Size: Covering an area of about 11,747 square kilometers, Tsavo East is one of Kenya’s largest national parks.
Wildlife: The park is renowned for its diverse wildlife, including elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and numerous bird species.
Landscapes: Tsavo East is characterized by vast open savannah plains, seasonal rivers, scrubland, and the famous red-colored soil known as “Tsavo red.”
Tsavo West National Park:
Size: With an area of approximately 9,065 square kilometers, Tsavo West is slightly smaller than Tsavo East.
Wildlife: Similar to Tsavo East, Tsavo West is home to an array of wildlife, such as elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, hippos, and various bird species.
Landscapes: The park features diverse landscapes, including volcanic hills, lava flows, dense woodlands, swamps, and the scenic Mzima Springs, where visitors can observe underwater hippos through an underwater viewing chamber.
Both parks offer exceptional opportunities for wildlife viewing, game drives, birdwatching, and photography. They are known for their rugged beauty, authentic wilderness experience, and the chance to witness the “Big Five” (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino) in their natural habitat.
