The honest answer is that a Kenya safari costs whatever your comfort level costs — the lions are free, but the beds vary enormously. As a Nairobi-based operator running private safaris every week of the year, we price trips across three broad tiers, and the per-person, per-day maths below is drawn directly from our own 2026 itineraries rather than industry averages.
All figures are per person sharing, exclude international flights, and assume a private safari — not a seat-in-vehicle group departure. Solo travellers should budget a single supplement, mainly driven by lodge pricing.
Cheap-looking safaris usually get expensive at the gate. Every Imara price above includes all national park and reserve entry fees, a professional English-speaking driver-guide, a pop-up-roof safari Land Cruiser with Wi-Fi and charging ports, all listed game drives and activities, meals as per itinerary, drinking water throughout, and AMREF Flying Doctors emergency evacuation cover for the duration of the safari. See our financial protection page for how deposits and payments are safeguarded.
Midrange is where most first-time Kenya travellers land, and it is genuinely good: full-board lodges and tented camps inside or beside the parks, the same wildlife and the same guides we send on luxury trips. A compact 4–5 day route covering the Masai Mara with Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha starts near $1,100 per person, while a comprehensive 10-day route adding Amboseli, Samburu and Ol Pejeta comes in around $2,675 — roughly $268 per day.

Luxury pricing buys smaller camps, better positions inside the parks, more spacious suites and more flexible days. Expect $400–$600 per person per day by road; adding internal flights between Nairobi and the Mara typically adds $150–$300 per person each way but saves five to six hours of driving. Our most-booked luxury routes are the 6-day circuit below and the 10-day version with flights at $6,113.

At the top end you are paying for the best suites in the ecosystem, private conservancy access, and itineraries built around flying rather than driving. A 7-day ultra-luxury circuit runs from $4,509 per person, and a 10-day cross-border Kenya–Tanzania flying safari reaches $11,897. Short on time? A 3-day fly-in Masai Mara safari from Nairobi starts at $1,554 — the fastest way to see the migration on a long weekend.

For a line-by-line breakdown of reserve fees and where the money goes, see our dedicated Masai Mara safari cost guide. Fees are set by the county and park authorities and can change; we always quote the current rates in writing before you commit.
Imara Africa Safaris recommends 6–7 days for a first Kenya safari: enough for the Masai Mara plus two more ecosystems without the trip becoming a driving marathon. Budget $2,000–$2,700 per person midrange or $2,700–$4,500 luxury, and check our guide to the best time for a Kenya safari before locking dates. If you are weighing Kenya against its southern neighbour, our Kenya vs Tanzania comparison covers the cost differences honestly.
Lodges and parks publish their 2027 rates from mid-2026 onwards, and the long-term pattern is steady, modest annual increases — driven by lodge rates, park fee reviews and fuel — rather than dramatic jumps. Two practical implications for 2027 planning:
Tell our Nairobi team your travel window, group size and comfort level — we'll price a private itinerary line by line, with no obligation.
