Safari Details

To stand atop a mountain, having walked and scrambled your way up is an invigorating experience. To make it to one of the peaks of Mount Kenya, the second-highest mountain in Africa, is an achievement indeed. This tour offers you a quick, challenging, yet manageable ascent up the former volcano.
From the lowlands of Mount Kenya National Park, you will make your way up the mountain and progress through the changing plant and animal life. From forested lands, up to sparse moorlands, with craggy, glacier-carved valleys towards the top, the diversity of what you will see during your time on Mount Kenya is breathtaking.
During your climb up the mountain, you will be accompanied by your own dedicated trekking guide. They will be able to help you spot and identify the wide range of flora and fauna that’s native to the area. Also, you will be accompanied by porters who will take care of transporting your luggage and ensure that hot drinks and food are on hand upon your arrival and at each camp.
This ascent can be made quickly over the four-day itinerary that we offer, however, we do advise that you take a day to acclimatize to the increased altitude with an overnight stay in Nanyuki on the day of arrival. This will attract an additional fee, please contact us for further information.

At 07:30 am we will collect you from your hotel, residence, or direct from the airport and immediately take you north to the highlands where Mount Kenya lies. At the town of Nanyuki you will stop and your guide will ensure that all the supplies you need for your adventure are on hand.

Enter Mount Kenya National Park through the Sirimon gate, then take a moment to sit and each a picnic lunch ready to fortify you for the hike ahead. Once you’ve eaten your fill you will be taken to start your trek, which will cover 10 kilometers heading uphill. The walk is through the forested levels of the mountain and you will be able to drink in the cool air and stunning greenery all around as you move.

Overnight, you will stay at Old Moses camp, sitting squat in the rugged terrain at a height of 3,300 meters above sea level. The camp is quaint and basic, and here you will have dinner cooked and have chance to rest up, ready for a day of trekking and discovery that lies ahead. Included in the first night trekking up Mount Kenya is:

Day 2 - Old Moses – Shipton Camp (13.5 km – 7 to 8 hours)

Breakfast is taken care of by your porters at the camp, fuelling you for a big day pushing high towards the Lenana Peak of this volcanic mountain. The morning’s walk will take your westwards through valleys and over ridges with plenty of challenge and amazing scenery to boot.

You’ll walk through Mackinder Valley, with its strange vegetation and scrublands as well as interesting native creatures such as the rock hyrax that scurries between rocks and boulders. Your guide will point out the interesting plants along the way, which include the ostrich plum lobelia and cabbage groundsel.

The end point of the day is Shipton camp, where your porters will have arrived early and readied warm drinks and food for your arrival. You’ll have arrived at an altitude of 4,200 metres during your climb and the glaciers and rocky outcrops that crown the mountain will now be in your eyeline. Rest up and sleep well, for tomorrow will be a long day.

Lenana Peak welcomes you from your endeavours and will hopefully reward you with breath-taking views that can even include Mount Kilimanjaro on the horizon on a clear day. Once you’ve reached the height of 4,985 m it’s time to being your trek back down. Initially, you’ll return to Shipton camp to take in a fuller breakfast before setting out back down to Old Moses camp.
