From Big Cat country in the Masai Mara to the endless Serengeti plains and the misty gorilla forests of Uganda and Rwanda, East Africa is the richest wildlife destination on Earth. Here is exactly how to plan a wildlife safari that delivers the sightings you dream of.
For first-time wildlife safaris, a Kenya–Tanzania combination is hard to beat. Pair the Masai Mara and Serengeti for big cats and the Great Migration, add Ngorongoro Crater for near-certain Big Five in a single day, then choose Uganda or Rwanda if mountain gorillas are on your list. Travel in the dry season (June–October) for the densest game viewing, use a private 4×4 with an expert guide, and allow 7–10 days for a complete, unhurried trip.
A wildlife safari is, at its heart, a series of game drives — early-morning and late-afternoon outings in an open-sided or pop-top 4×4, when animals are most active and the light is at its best. A good guide does far more than drive: they read tracks, interpret behaviour, position you for the action, and know which corner of the park is producing sightings that week.
East Africa's parks each have a personality. The Masai Mara and Serengeti are open grasslands famous for lion, cheetah and the Great Migration. Amboseli delivers huge elephant herds beneath Kilimanjaro. Ngorongoro Crater packs the Big Five into a compact, high-altitude bowl. Tarangire is baobab-studded and elephant-rich, while Uganda's Bwindi and Rwanda's Volcanoes protect the world's last mountain gorillas.
The single biggest factor in a great wildlife safari is time and pace. Rushing five parks in five days means long transfers and tired travellers; two or three well-chosen parks over a week produces deeper, calmer, more rewarding sightings. We build itineraries around the wildlife you most want to see — then add the logistics, lodges and light-aircraft hops that make it effortless.
Why Travel for Wildlife
Lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo — plus cheetah, wild dog and over 25 antelope species across a single trip.
Over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra circle the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem, with dramatic river crossings from July to October.
Trek to habituated gorilla families in Uganda and Rwanda — one of the most moving wildlife encounters on the planet.
Open plains, golden light and habituated wildlife make East Africa a dream for photographers of every level.
Over 1,000 bird species, from flamingo-pink soda lakes to lilac-breasted rollers and martial eagles.
Our silver- and gold-level guides turn a drive into a masterclass — and know where the action is each season.
Where to Go
Each reserve offers a different wildlife experience. Select one to compare game density, big-cat odds and what it's famous for.
Big-cat capital of Africa and the northern stage of the Great Migration. Resident lion, cheetah and leopard make it superb year-round, with electric energy during the July–October crossings.
When to Go
Game viewing is rewarding all year, but the season shapes what you see and how easily.
Dry season — peak
The best all-round game viewing: thin vegetation, animals concentrated at water, and the Mara river crossings. Book lodges early.
Short dry / calving
Excellent predator action on the southern Serengeti as wildebeest calve, plus warm, clear days and fewer crowds.
Short rains
Lush, green and photogenic with newborn animals and migrant birds. Brief afternoon showers; great value and quieter parks.
Long rains — green season
Dramatic skies, lowest prices and superb birding. Some camps close and a few roads get muddy, but wildlife remains.

Wildlife Safari FAQ
The questions travellers ask us most about planning a wildlife safari in East Africa.
Kenya and Tanzania are the classic choices for sheer wildlife density and the Great Migration, and they combine seamlessly. Choose Uganda or Rwanda if seeing mountain gorillas is a priority. Many of our best trips blend two countries — for example, the Masai Mara with the Serengeti, or a Kenyan safari followed by gorilla trekking.
