Stand metres from a family of wild mountain gorillas in the misty forests of Uganda and Rwanda — one of the most profound wildlife encounters on Earth. Here's everything you need to plan it: permits, fitness, timing and the perfect itinerary.
Yes — most travellers call it the highlight of their lives. You spend a strictly-limited one hour with a habituated gorilla family after a guided forest hike. Choose Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park) for easy access from Kigali and shorter treks at a premium permit price ($1,500), or Uganda (Bwindi) for a more affordable permit ($800), more gorilla families and the option to combine with a full wildlife safari. The minimum age is 15, and a reasonable level of fitness helps.
Gorilla trekking is a guided hike through dense montane rainforest to find a habituated gorilla family — a group accustomed to brief human visits. After an early-morning briefing, trackers who have located the gorillas at dawn guide your small group (maximum eight) to them. The hike can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours over steep, muddy terrain, which is why a moderate level of fitness is valuable.
Once you reach the family, you spend a magical, strictly-limited one hour in their company — watching silverbacks, mothers and tumbling youngsters at close range, usually within 7–10 metres. The time limit and small group size exist to protect the gorillas from stress and disease, and the high permit fees fund the conservation that has brought mountain gorillas back from the brink.
The two prime destinations are Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, with Uganda's Mgahinga and the option of golden monkey and chimpanzee trekking nearby. Permits are limited and sell out, so booking several months ahead is essential — we secure them for you as part of planning your trip.
Why Trek for Gorillas
Within metres of a 200kg silverback and his family — an emotional, humbling hour you'll never forget.
Permit fees fund the protection that has grown mountain gorilla numbers from near-extinction to over 1,000.
The forest hike through ancient, mist-wrapped rainforest is a reward in itself — earned, not handed to you.
Add golden monkeys, chimpanzee trekking and Uganda's classic wildlife parks for a complete primate-and-plains trip.
Intimate, low-light forest portraits of wild gorillas that few people on Earth will ever take.
Maximum eight visitors per family per day keeps the experience intimate and the gorillas calm.
Where to Trek
Both deliver world-class gorilla trekking. Select a destination to compare access, cost and experience.
Just 2–3 hours from Kigali airport, Rwanda offers the most convenient gorilla trekking, often with shorter hikes — at a premium $1,500 permit. Ideal for short, high-end trips.
When to Go
Trekking runs year-round, but drier months make the forest trails easier.
Long dry — best
Driest trails and clearer forest. The most popular and comfortable trekking window — book permits well ahead.
Short dry
A second drier season with good conditions and festive availability. Excellent for trekking and combining with wildlife.
Long rains
Lush and green with lower lodge rates and fewer trekkers, but muddier, more challenging trails. Gorillas are often found lower and closer.
Short rains
Brief afternoon showers, beautiful greenery and good value. Trekking remains very rewarding with fewer crowds.

Plan With Experts
Gorilla trekking is permit-driven and logistically precise — permits are limited, sell out months ahead, and Uganda and Rwanda each suit different travellers. As a Nairobi-based East African specialist (KATO bonded, TRA licensed), we secure your permits, match you to the right country and sector, and brief you on the trek's realities so there are no surprises on the mountain.
We arrange the right fitness expectations, the right lodge near the trailhead, and the seamless transfers that make a complex trip feel effortless — and we can pair your trek with a classic Kenyan or Tanzanian wildlife safari for the ultimate East African journey.
