Yes — most travellers call it the highlight of their lives. You spend a strictly-limited one hour with a habituated gorilla family after a guided forest hike. Choose Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park) for easy access from Kigali and shorter treks at a premium permit price ($1,500), or Uganda (Bwindi) for a more affordable permit ($800), more gorilla families and the option to combine with a full wildlife safari. The minimum age is 15, and a reasonable level of fitness helps.
Gorilla trekking is a guided hike through dense montane rainforest to find a habituated gorilla family — a group accustomed to brief human visits. After an early-morning briefing, trackers who have located the gorillas at dawn guide your small group (maximum eight) to them. The hike can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours over steep, muddy terrain, which is why a moderate level of fitness is valuable.
Once you reach the family, you spend a magical, strictly-limited one hour in their company — watching silverbacks, mothers and tumbling youngsters at close range, usually within 7–10 metres. The time limit and small group size exist to protect the gorillas from stress and disease, and the high permit fees fund the conservation that has brought mountain gorillas back from the brink.
The two prime destinations are Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, with Uganda's Mgahinga and the option of golden monkey and chimpanzee trekking nearby. A second drier season with good conditions and festive availability. Excellent for trekking and combining with wildlife.
Long rains
Lush and green with lower lodge rates and fewer trekkers, but muddier, more challenging trails. Gorillas are often found lower and closer.
Short rains
