Lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo — the legendary Big Five. Here's where to see all five, which parks make it near-certain, and how to build a safari around Africa's most sought-after wildlife.
Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania offers the best chance of all five in a single day, thanks to its dense, compact wildlife and resident black rhino. In Kenya, the Masai Mara plus Lake Nakuro (for rhino) is a winning combination, while Amboseli and Tarangire add spectacular elephants. Rhino are the hardest of the five, so include a dedicated rhino sanctuary or Ngorongoro. Allow 5–8 days across two or three parks for a strong chance of the complete set.
The term 'Big Five' originally described the five animals that were hardest and most dangerous to hunt on foot: lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and Cape buffalo. Today it's the ultimate wildlife-watching checklist — and East Africa is one of the few places you can realistically tick off all five on a single trip.
Each species has its own habits. Lions are social and often easy to find resting in prides; leopards are solitary, nocturnal and the trickiest cat to spot, frequently draped in a riverine tree. Elephants and buffalo are abundant in most parks, while rhino — both black and white — are the scarcest, concentrated in protected sanctuaries and a handful of parks like Ngorongoro and Lake Nakuru.
Completing the Big Five is about choosing the right combination of parks. No single open park guarantees all five, so we pair a high-density reserve for cats and elephants with a dedicated rhino location. With expert guides who know each animal's behaviour and the day's sightings, the full set is very achievable — and deeply rewarding.
Meet the Five
Africa's iconic big cat. Strong prides in the Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro make sightings reliable and often prolonged.
The elusive one. Best odds in the Serengeti's Seronera valley, the Mara's riverine forests and Tanzania's Tarangire.
Amboseli's big-tusker herds beneath Kilimanjaro and Tarangire's giant families are the continent's elephant highlights.
The rarest. Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Nakuru and Ol Pejeta sanctuary offer the most dependable black and white rhino sightings.
Often overlooked but formidable. Large herds roam nearly every major park, frequently alongside the other four.
Our guides read fresh tracks, alarm calls and behaviour to find the harder species — turning luck into method.
Where to Go
Combine these reserves for the strongest shot at all five. Select one to see its strengths.
The single best place to see the Big Five in one day. A compact, high-altitude caldera with resident black rhino, big lion prides, elephants and buffalo at extraordinary density.
When to Go
All five can be seen year-round, but the dry season makes spotting easier.
Dry season — best
Thin vegetation and animals at water make every species easier to find, leopard included. The strongest window for the full set.
Short dry
Warm, clear days and excellent predator action — a great alternative high season with fewer crowds.
Short rains
Lush and photogenic with newborns and migrant birds; brief showers and good value.
Green season
Dramatic skies and lowest prices. Thicker bush can make leopard and rhino harder, but sightings continue.

SafariPlan With Experts
Completing the Big Five is a planning challenge as much as a wildlife one — no single open park reliably holds all five, and rhino in particular need careful routing. As a Nairobi-based, KATO bonded and TRA-licensed operator, we know exactly which parks to combine and which guides consistently find the harder species.
We pair high-density big-cat reserves with dedicated rhino locations, brief you on ethical, low-impact viewing, and assign guides who track behaviour rather than just drive. The result is a realistic shot at the complete Big Five, on an itinerary tailored to your time and budget.
