The perfect African holiday has two acts: the thrill of the bush and the bliss of the beach. Pair big-cat game drives with the powder-white sands of Zanzibar or Diani for a trip that has it all — adventure, then deep relaxation.
Do the safari first, then the beach. Spend 3–6 days on game drives in the Serengeti, Masai Mara or another prime park, then take a short scenic flight to the coast for 4–7 days in Zanzibar or Diani. The classic pairings are Tanzania safari + Zanzibar and Kenya safari + Diani, both linked by easy flights. Travel in the dry season (June–October) for the best of both, and allow 9–12 days total.
A safari is exhilarating — but pre-dawn starts and long game drives can be intense. Following it with a beach finale gives your trip a natural rhythm: the adventure of the bush, then the chance to slow down, sleep in and soak up the sun. It's why beach-and-bush is the most popular way to structure a longer African holiday.
East Africa makes the combination effortless. Short flights connect the great parks to the Indian Ocean: the Serengeti or Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar in around an hour, and the Masai Mara to Diani or Mombasa just as quickly. There's no long, tiring overland haul — you can be watching lions in the morning and swimming in the ocean by sunset.
The coast itself is a destination. Zanzibar offers spice-island history, dhow cruises and world-class diving; Diani brings Kenya's finest white-sand beach and reef snorkelling; and quieter shores like Lamu, Watamu and Tanzania's Mafia Island add character. We match the beach to your style — barefoot-luxury, family-friendly or wonderfully remote.
Best of Both
Big cats, elephants and — in season — the Great Migration in the Serengeti and Masai Mara.
Powder-white sand, warm turquoise water and coral reefs in Zanzibar, Diani and beyond.
Short scenic flights link bush to beach — no long drives, more time enjoying both.
Front-load the excitement, then unwind completely — the perfect balance for couples and families alike.
Spice farms, Stone Town's Swahili heritage, fresh seafood and dhow sunset cruises round out the coast.
Honeymooners, families and first-timers all love the variety — and we tailor the mix to each.
Where to Go
Pair a safari region with a beach finale. Select one to see what it offers.
The flagship combination: the endless Serengeti for big cats and the Migration, then a one-hour flight to Zanzibar's spice-scented beaches and barefoot-luxury resorts.
When to Go
You want both great game viewing and great beach weather — these windows align them.
Dry season — best
Peak game viewing and the Mara crossings, with warm, sunny, dry coast weather. The ideal beach-and-bush window.
Short dry
Hot and clear, with Serengeti calving and excellent beach conditions. A superb, slightly quieter alternative.
Peak season
Best crossings and reliably dry coast, but the busiest and priciest — book well ahead for the top camps and resorts.
Long rains
Greenest and best value inland, but the coast sees its heaviest rains — we usually steer the beach portion away from these weeks.

Beach & Bush FAQ
What travellers ask us most about combining a safari with a beach holiday.
Almost always the safari first. Game drives involve early starts and full days, so it makes sense to front-load the adventure and finish on the beach, where you can decompress, sleep in and relax before flying home. It gives the trip a natural, satisfying arc.
